Planting seeds indoors

Carrots bean peas and melons are not good to start indoors.  They do not transplant well and some of them such as carrots are planted in such large numbers it is not realistic.

If you are starting indoors to plant outdoors you want to start 8-10 weeks before the last frost.  Start too early and they are too big to move.  Start too late and they are not ready yet.

Good soil is a key thing for maximum germination.  Seed soil varies a little from indoor potting soil but, it varies greatly from the dirt in your yard.  It is 40% compost 60% coconut fiber in our mix and we add some vermiculite.

The 10/20 dimension plastic containers fit well in a larger square holder.  A big pot is too much seed starting mix for the cost and it is the most expensive soil you can get.  You do not keep the subpar plants instead use natural selection to weed out the week plants.  Too much water and it becomes aneorobic too little and it gets dry.  Watering from the bottom up is best to not rinse out all the nutrients.  Covering keeps the humididty up and keeps the environment moist.  Do not seed to deep.

Tomatoes and some peppers can be multiple seeds in one small container.  This does not work with smaller seeds.  When you are planting at this level you are probably commercial.  Seedlings like 80-90 degrees to deep warm.

LED are the best lights but they are the most expensive.  If your plants are long and leggy and spindly they do not have enough light.

We have seeds, lights, racks, & seed starter kits in the products store. Download one of our pdf packages if you want to easily know which kits to use for your are!
