Black walnuts have higher levels of antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and other health-promoting compounds than the more common English walnuts, making them useful in reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Plant in deep, well-drained, permeable soil (at least five to six feet) with pH between 6-7. After planting in winter/spring and watering initially, use rainfall as a guide to keep the soil moist. Young small trees need four to 12 gallons of water per day; larger trees require approximately 20 to 40 gallons per day.
