Heartnuts (juglans ailantifolia var. cordiformis) are single lobed walnuts. Much like the “English” walnuts (juglans regia) that have a round thin but a dimply shell with two lobes (or two halves), the Heartnut has a thin shell but with only one lobe and the shell varies from dimply to smooth. Plant in deep, well-drained, permeable soil (at least five to six feet) with pH between 6-7. After planting in winter/spring and watering initially, use rainfall as a guide to keep the soil moist. Young small trees need four to 12 gallons of water per day; larger trees require approximately 20 to 40 gallons per day.
