These are the last list of varieties or walnuts for the final day of walnut week. We have purchased a Franquette and a Heartnut for our installation on this permaculture design. We are not planting until we have finished the basic stages of our soil remediation. We added horse manure yesterday. Today we are installing new topsoil the til and then we will be making our install date. We want to go with a time when the ground is cooler to avoid shock but, we have to see if that is the best approach or if we should just run it.
CARMELO WALNUT (Juglans regia) Vigorous and will get large, 40-50 ft. if given time and space. Self fruitful. Carmelo English Walnuts have large, flavorful nutmeats that have a light color.
CARPATHIAN ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Originally from the Carpathian Mountains in Poland. This Carpathian English Walnut strain of English or Persian Walnut is known for winter hardiness and late blooming in spring.
CASCADE ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Manregian x Russian. Thin shell, excellent flavor, plump, light colored kernels. Fast growing, large tree. Cascade English Walnuts are cold hardy seedlings of J. regia which can be grown throughout much of North America. The Cascade parent tree has medium large nuts with up to 56% kernel. Zone 4-9
CHANDLER ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Highly productive University of California at Davis release. Medium-large, plump, light colored kernels of outstanding quality. Well sealed shells, yet easy to crack. Late blooming to escape spring frosts. Chandler English Walnut is the number one new variety in California. Zone 6-9.
COOKE’S GIANT ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Very large, sweet nut. Cooke’s Giant English Walnut is a selection from Oregon.
FRANQUETTE WALNUT (Juglans regia) Old French variety with medium-large elongated nuts of good flavor. Especially popular in areas prone to late frost, or blossom rot in springtime, as Franquette English Walnut is very late to break dormancy and start blooming. Somewhat self-fertile, pollinating with Chandler can increase yield. Zone 6-9.
HOWARD ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Medium-large, plump, light-colored kernels of very good quality. Well sealed shell, yet easy to crack. Late leafing and flowering to help escape spring frosts. Self fruitful and productive. Grafted onto NC Black Walnut rootstock to give resistance to oak root fungus. Howard English Walnut Tree is small for a walnut, so they can be planted 20 ft. apart. Zone 6-9.
IDAHO CARPATHIAN ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Large, sweet, good quality nuts. Late blooming to escape spring frosts. Idaho Carpathian English Walnut is vigorous, productive and hardy. This Carpathian Walnut has been grafted onto black walnut rootstock. Zone 4 – 8.
LIVERMORE ENGLISH WALNUT (Juglans regia) Looks like a regular English walnut from the outside of the shell. Crack Livemore English Walnut and the kernal inside is a striking red color yet tastes like a regular walnut. Zone 6-9.
